Every molecule in nature is chiral, but not every molecule is chirally correct.
What Does “Chirally Correct” mean?
Chiral is the Greek word for hand. In the same way that our hands mirror each other, most skincare ingredients are chiral, meaning they have a “left” or a “right” chemical orientation. All body cells, including those in the skin, recognize and prefer a specific orientation of an ingredient. This process is one of extreme precision! An ingredient attaching to a cell receptor is analogous to a hand in a glove! For example Vitamin C is 50% left-handed (L-ascorbic acid) and 50% right-handed (D-ascorbic acid). Research has shown that only the “L” version is an effective antioxidant (and thus is “chirally correct”). The other half of the product (if it is not “chirally correct”) is ineffective and can often be irritating to the skin.
Organic vs. Chiral
Organic deals with farming/growing methods of raw ingredients.
Chirality has to do with bio-molecular chemistry. They are completely different and serve 2 completely different purposes. It is possible to have chiral ingredients that are derived from organically grown ingredients.
Organic means the land the crops were grown on is free of chemical pesticides and other harmful ingredients. It also means the crops were grown without chemical pesticides.
A chirally correct ingredient means that its molecules have been separated in order to make use of only those that are beneficial and to remove the ones that can cause harm or an adverse reaction (e.g. Allergies).
In 1998 the FDA mandated that pharmaceutical companies must consider chirality when developing a drug. We believe the skin, being the largest organ in the body deserves the same consideration as the other organs of the body and that chirality is an important factor in developing skin care products as well. If the ingredients in a skin care product can link up properly with the correct receptors, then that product is going to be safer and more effective.
